Onboarding training scheduled for new Active Partners

As of mid-September, we are starting an onboarding training for new Active Partners. This training will provide backgrounds to the method and data sources, and will support your first product Social Impact Assessment case study from scratch to report.

There are five sessions spanning 12 hours. New Active Partners also get additionally 12 hours support in separate private sessions or as helpdesk. Having completed the fists case study qualifies you to become a Core Partner.

Development of a new ISO standard for Social LCA

Based on a New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) written by our PSIA team and the social LC Alliance team, a process kicks off to develop a new ISO 14075 standard for Social LCA. To get involved we suggest to contact your national standardization office.

Cooperation with the Harvard Extension school

The PSIA team has been invited to provide the social LCA training at the Harvard Extension School and we developed a curriculum, that balances the scientific thinking underpinning our Handbook with the pragmatism and applicability for industry. Enrollment will start in November; the first sessions are in January 2022.

EU to develop criteria for social impacts

On April 5th a large meeting (70 people) was organized by DG Growth with the aim to discuss how and if the European market would benefit from the development of social standards. The director, Gwenole Cozigou, made it clear that the commission would like to enable a level playing field.

Companies that benefit from underpaying workers, or even use forced labor should not be able to compete with companies, that manage the social impacts well and pay adequately. Although, this was not mentioned directly there is much analogy in the thinking that led to the development of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).

During the meeting a series of interesting case studies were presented. There was much interest in the experiences of the Product Social Metrics Roundtable, the SEEbalance® methodology from BASF and the presentation of the work of the Social LC Alliance.

The commission is contemplating to request the development of a European CEN standard. There will be a number of smaller follow up meetings with various experts, and we will of course stay engaged.
